Dr Aline Charabaty (FM, 1998) received the SCOPY Social Media Acumen and Authentic Leadership Award for 2020. The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG)’s SCOPY recognizes the achievements of ACG members in their community engagement, education, and awareness efforts for colorectal cancer prevention.

Dr. Charabaty created her Twitter-based #ColonCancerAwareness and #ScreenMoreFearLess campaigns for the two Twitter handles she manages—her personal and professional account, @DCharabaty, and @MondayNightIBD, which she created in 2019 to discuss IBD-related cases with the IBD physician and patient communities. On @DCharabaty, she created videos that addressed the importance of getting screened for CRC as part of any resolution for healthy living, who should get screened for CRC and why, the various screening options and shared her own experience of getting a colonoscopy, with the goal of demystifying the process and offering tips to overcome some of the practical barriers to colonoscopy. For @MondayNightIBD, she used casebased discussions to highlight the importance and the particularities of CRC screening as well as management of dysplasia and colorectal cancer in the IBD population.

Dr Aline Charabaty is the director of the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) Center at Sibley Memorial Hospital. She received her medical degree from Saint Joseph University School of Medicine, Beirut, in 1998 and completed her internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Before joining Johns Hopkins Medicine, Dr. Charabaty was the director of the IBD Center at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital for more than 10 years.

Dr Aline Charabaty also serves as President of USJ Alumni - Washington DC.
