Le Recteur de l’Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth (USJ), Pr Salim Daccache s.j., s’est rendu aux Etats-Unis pour une tournée incluant plusieurs villes du pays, accompagné d’une délégation de l’Université comprenant le Président de la Fédération des Associations des Anciens de l’USJ, Pr Christian Makary ainsi que la Directrice de la Fondation USJ, Mme Cynthia Ghobril Andrea et rejoint par la Directrice du Bureau de l’USJ en Amérique du Nord, Mme Randa Hakim. La tournée a débuté le 20 avril et s’est achevée le 28 avril. Un marathon placé sous le signe de la solidarité avec des objectifs clairs : soutenir l’Université, ses étudiants et son hôpital universitaire, l’Hôtel Dieu de France (HDF), de même que retrouver les Alumni de l’USJ et stimuler la proximité avec eux.
La tournée s’est annoncée chargée dès le départ. La délégation a intensifié les rencontres avec nombre de personnalités et Alumni et s’est employée avec assiduité pour présenter l’état des lieux sur la vie, la situation et les besoins de l’Université et de l’HDF, dans le contexte grave des crises sanitaire, économique et financière du pays et surtout sur les campagnes conduites par la Fondation USJ à titre de projets de de levée de fonds. L’accent a été également placé sur le secteur de l’éducation au Liban : ses problèmes, son importance et son futur. Quant à l’objectif majeur, à savoir les Alumni de l’USJ, il a été couvert largement à travers la présentation des stratégies déployées pour engager le réseau Alumni, en particulier en Amérique du Nord, notamment par la nouvelle plateforme digitale AlumniUSJ et le programme de Mentorat, récemment lancé par la Fédération. Une visite qui a suscité l’espoir et l’enthousiasme des Alumni de l’Université et de la diaspora.
Première destination du déplacement : Washington D.C. !
Le Recteur s’est entretenu avec le R.P. Brian Paulson s.j., Président de la Conférence jésuite du Canada et des États-Unis ainsi qu’avec le R.P. Michael J. Garanzini s.j., Président de l’Association des Collèges et Universités Jésuites. Ensuite, il retrouva la délégation pour des rencontres avec Dr Nadim Haddad et Mme Emily Riffle, respectivement Chef du département de gastroentérologie et Vice-présidente philanthropie au Medstar Georgetown University Hospital ainsi que MM. John DeGeoia et Tom Banchoff, respectivement Président et Vice-président de la Georgetown University, puis avec le R.P. William L. Georges, à la Gregorian University Foundation. Le US Department of State a également fait partie de l’itinéraire où la délégation a été reçue par Mmes Kim Desilda et Elisabeth Martin, alors qu’elle a été accueillie autour d’un déjeuner offert par le Chargé d’affaires à l’Ambassade du Liban à Washington D.C., M. Wael Hachem, en présence de l’Ancien ambassadeur du Liban à Washington, Dr. Farid Abboud. La journée du 21 avril s’est clôturée par un dîner convivial organisé par le Chapitre USJ Alumni - Washington D.C., sous le patronage du Chargé d’affaires, M. Hachem, et gracieusement offert par la famille Nammour. Plus d’une centaine d’amis et Alumni de l’USJ étaient présents, notamment : le R.P. Michael Garanzini s.j., l’ambassadeur Edward Gabriel, Président de l’American Task Force For Lebanon (ATFL) et son épouse, Dr. Farid Abboud et son épouse. Dans son discours de bienvenue, la Présidente du Chapitre, Dr Aline Charabati a témoigné sur l’USJ et sa place particulière dans la vie des Alumni. Elle appela les convives, à plusieurs reprises, à soutenir leur Alma mater. Engagée et solidaire envers son Alma mater, Dr Charabati a lancé en 2021 un fonds de bourse portant son nom et dont les bénéficiaires sont sélectionnés parmi les étudiants inscrits à la Faculté de médecine (FM) de l’USJ suivant des critères, sociaux et académiques. Au cours du diner, le Recteur a remis à M. Hachem, la médaille de mérite en signe de reconnaissance pour son soutien et à David Nammour la médaille d’honneur pour son accueil et sa grande générosité.
Une rencontre débat avec le Recteur et la délégation a été le point culminant de la 2ème destination : Boston. En effet, sur l’invitation du Pr Joseph Aoun, Président de la Northeastern University et son épouse, le Chapitre USJ Alumni – Boston a organisé une réception à laquelle de nombreux Alumni et amis de l’USJ ont été conviés. Evoquant la mission de l’USJ dans l’édification du Liban et de ses institutions, la Présidente du Chapitre, Mme Nicole Babikian Hajjar, a rappelé l’action que l’Université et l’HDF ont mené face à l’explosion du 4 août. Babikian a déclaré qu’aujourd’hui, l’USJ et l’HDF saignent à leur tour et que les Alumni ont le devoir et la responsabilité de leur venir en aide dans la poursuite de leur mission. A la fin de la rencontre le Recteur a offert au Président Aoun la médaille des 145 ans de l’USJ en signe d’estime et de reconnaissance. Notons qu’à Boston, le Recteur s’est entretenu avec Le R.P. William Leahy, Président du Boston College.
A New York qui a constitué la 3ème étape de la tournée, le Recteur et la délégation qui l’accompagne ont rendu visite à l’Evêque du diocèse de Saint-Maron à Brooklyn Mgr Gregory Mansour, avant de rencontrer des Alumni de l’Université autour d’une réception organisée par la Présidente du Chapitre USJ Alumni – New York Mme Nada Abousleiman Sara, et de retrouver dans un tête-à-tête M. Ray Debbané autour d’un dîner. À cette occasion, le Recteur a remis la médaille d’honneur à M. Debbané, en signe de reconnaissance et de remerciement pour sa solidarité avec l’USJ.
A Detroit qui a été l’étape ultime qui a clôturé le voyage, la délégation a été accueillie à la résidence du Président du Chapitre Alumni USJ – Detroit, M. Sejaan Ghafari. Accompagnée de M. Ghafari, la délégation s’est rendue au Henry Ford Hospital pour rencontrer le Vice-président et Chef des services cliniques Dr. Adnan Munkarah, et le Président des opérations de santé et chef de l’exploitations. M. Robert G. Riney ; puis elle a visité le R.P. Georges Shalhoub à la Basilique « St. Mary’s Antiochian Orthodox ». Lors du dîner qu’il a offert en l’honneur du Recteur et auquel il a convié plusieurs amis et Alumni de l’USJ, M. Ghafari a insisté sur le rôle majeur que l’USJ a joué dans l’histoire du Liban, incitant les invités à participer activement et à contribuer aux campagnes de levée de fonds mises en place par l’Université. En cours de soirée, le Recteur a offert à M. Ghafari la médaille d’honneur de l’Université, en guise de remerciement pour son dévouement et sa fidélité. Rappelons que M. Ghafari a constitué en 2018 le Fonds de bourse au nom des Alumni du Campus du Liban Sud (CLS) de l’USJ et destiné aux étudiants du CLS qui sont en difficulté, mobilisant les Alumni et amis à Detroit pour l’alimentation du fonds. Alors qu’en 2021 la Faculté de gestion et de management (FGM), branche du Liban Sud a pris le nom de « Sejaan Boutros Ghafari ».

USJ on Tour in the United States
Prof. Salim Daccache s.j., Rector of Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ), visited the United States on a multi-city tour, accompanied by a delegation from the University that included the President of the Federation of USJ Alumni Associations, Prof. Christian Makary, as well as the Director of the Fondation USJ, Ms. Cynthia Ghobril Andrea, and Ms. Randa Hakim, Director of the USJ North America Office. The tour, driven by solidarity and having clear goals, began on April 20 and ended on April 28. Among these goals are to support the University, its students, and its hospital, Hôtel Dieu de France (HDF), as well as to reconnect and foster closer ties with USJ Alumni.
The tour was quite eventful. The delegation intensively met with many key figures and Alumni and devoted itself to reporting on the situation and needs of USJ and HDF in the context of the serious health, economic and financial crises in the country, and particularly on the fundraising campaigns conducted by the Fondation USJ. Special focus was also placed on the educational sector in Lebanon, its problems, its importance, and its future. The main goal, i.e. USJ Alumni, was extensively tackled through the presentation of strategies used to engage the Alumni network, especially in North America, through the new Alumni USJ digital platform and the Mentoring program, both of which were recently launched by the Federation. The trip was met with hope and excitement by the University’s alumni and the diaspora.
First Stop: Washington D.C.!
The Rector met with Father Brian Paulson, S.J., President of the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States (JCCUS), and Father Michael J. Garanzini, S.J., President of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU). He then met with Dr. Nadim Haddad and Ms. Emily Riffle, respectively Head of Gastroenterology and Vice-President and Chief Philanthropy Officer at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital. He also met with Dr. John DeGeoia, President of Georgetown University, and his Vice-President, Dr. Tom Banchoff, and with Father William L. Georges, Senior Advisor to the President of the Gregorian University Foundation. The US Department of State was also part of the itinerary. Ms. Kim Desilda and Ms. Elisabeth Martin welcomed the delegation at their luncheon hosted by the Chargé d’Affaires ad interim at the Lebanese Embassy in Washington, D.C., Mr. Wael Hachem, in the presence of the former Lebanese Ambassador to Washington, Dr. Farid Abboud. April 21 wrapped up with a friendly dinner held by the USJ Alumni – Washington D.C. Chapter, under the patronage of Mr. Hachem, and courtesy of the Nammour family. More than a hundred USJ friends and Alumni were present, including Rev. Fr. Michael Garanzini s.j., Ambassador Edward Gabriel, President of the American Task Force for Lebanon (ATFL) and his wife, and Dr. Farid Abboud and his wife. Dr. Aline Charabati, Chapter President, spoke about USJ and its unique importance in the lives of its Alumni in her welcoming speech. On several occasions, she urged the guests to support their alma mater. Committed to and supportive of her Alma Mater, Dr. Charabati established a Scholarship Fund in her name in 2021, with beneficiaries chosen from the Faculty of Medicine (FM) at USJ based on social and academic criteria. During the dinner, the Rector awarded Mr. Hashem with the medal of merit as a token of recognition for his support and David Nammour with the medal of honor in recognition of his hospitality and great generosity.
Second Stop: Boston!
The USJ Alumni – Boston Chapter hosted a reception at the invitation of Prof. Joseph Aoun, President of Northeastern University, and his wife, to which many USJ Alumni and friends were invited. Mrs. Nicole Babikian Hajjar, Chapter President, referred to USJ’s mission of building Lebanon and its institutions and recalled the action taken by the University and HDF in the aftermath of the August 4 explosion. Babikian said that today, USJ and HDF are in turn suffering and that Alumni have a duty and responsibility to help them carry on their mission. At the end of the meeting, the Rector presented President Aoun with the USJ 145th anniversary medal as a token of esteem and recognition. The Rector also met in Boston with Rev. Fr. William Leahy, President of Boston College.
Third Stop: New York!
In New York, the Rector and the accompanying delegation visited the Bishop of the Diocese of Saint Maron in Brooklyn, Gregory Mansour, before meeting with the University’s Alumni at a reception hosted by the President of the USJ Alumni – New York Chapter, Nada Abousleiman Sara, and meeting with Ray Debbané over dinner. During this event, the Rector presented the medal of honor to Mr. Debbané, as a sign of recognition and thanks for his solidarity with USJ.
Last Stop: Detroit!
The delegation was hosted in Detroit at the home of Mr. Sejaan Ghafari, President of the USJ Alumni – Detroit Chapter. Mr. Ghafari led the delegation to Henry Ford Hospital to meet with Dr. Adnan Munkarah, Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer, and Mr. Robert G. Riney, President of Healthcare Operations and Chief Operating Officer. After that, the delegation paid a visit to Rev. George Shalhoub at St. Mary’s Antiochian Orthodox Basilica. At the dinner in honor of the Rector, which was attended by several USJ friends and Alumni, Mr. Ghafari emphasized the significant role that USJ has played in Lebanon’s history and urged the guests to actively participate and contribute to the University’s fundraising campaigns. Mr. Ghafari was presented with the University’s medal of honor by the Rector during the evening as a token of appreciation for his dedication and loyalty. We would like to recall that, in 2018, Mr. Ghafari established a Scholarship Fund on behalf of the USJ Campus of South Lebanon (CLS) Alumni for CLS students in need, enlisting the help of Alumni and friends in Detroit to fund the scholarship. As of 2021, the Faculty of Business Administration and Management (FGM) – Branch of South Lebanon carries the name of Sejaan Boutros Ghafari.
