Born in Broumana in 1936, Chorbishop Dominique Ashkar was a distinguished Maronite priest and Alumnus of Saint Joseph University of Beirut. He completed two years of philosophy before graduating from the Faculty of Theology, laying the foundation for his lifelong ministry.
He was ordained in 1962 in Bkerke by then-Bishop Nasrallah Sfeir, who later became Patriarch. His pastoral journey began in various Maronite communities across the United States, where he served in Alabama, Torrington, Waterbury, North Jackson, Youngstown, and Cleveland. In 1987, he was appointed pastor of Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church in Washington, D.C., a position he held until his retirement in 2018.
As Diocesan Director of Religious Education, he played a vital role in strengthening faith formation and preserving Maronite traditions, including the publication of religious books to support catechesis and spiritual education.
Beyond his pastoral responsibilities, Chorbishop Ashkar was a highly regarded public figure, often called upon to speak at significant events. His influence reached well beyond his parish, leaving a lasting impact on Maronite communities across the United States.
On February 20, 2025, Chorbishop Ashkar passed away. While he will be laid to rest in Lebanon, a wake and Divine Liturgy will be held at Our Lady of Lebanon Church in Washington, D.C., to honor his memory.
His legacy of faith, education, and service will forever be remembered by the Maronite Church and the Alumni of Saint Joseph University.
