Le Chapitre de Houston de l’Association Alumni de l’USJ a organisé son 1er diner de gala ! L’évènement a eu lieu le samedi 19 novembre 2022 : près de 300 Alumni et amis de l’Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth (USJ), se sont rassemblés autour du recteur de l’USJ, Pr Salim Daccache s.j. et de la délégation qui l’a accompagné et qui se compose du président de la Fédération des Associations des Anciens de l’USJ, Pr Christian Makary et de la directrice de la Fondation USJ, Mme Cynthia Ghobril Andrea.
La soirée, qui a commencé par une prière d'ouverture du R.P. Edward Hanna, curé de la paroisse « Our Lady of the Cedars », a mis au jour l'importance des liens tissés au sein de la communauté des Alumni de l’USJ qui restent fidèles aux valeurs de leur Alma mater et qui témoignent de solidarité envers elle.
Souhaitant la bienvenue aux convives, Dr Pierre Khoury, président du Chapitre de Houston, a brossé un panorama de la communauté libanaise à Houston.
Mme Cynthia Ghobril a fait le point sur les initiatives entreprises par la Fondation USJ dans le contexte de crises économique et sociale de plus en plus difficile. Selon Mme Ghobril, soutenir des étudiants qui ont besoin d’aide financières équivaut à donner la chance à la prochaine génération de diplômés de l’USJ pour exceller et réussir.
Pr Christian Makary a pointé les efforts déployés depuis quelques années pour redynamiser les liens entre l’Université et les Alumni mais aussi entre les Alumni eux-mêmes. Il a marqué la synergie et l’important rôle des Alumni établis à l’international, en l’occurrence à Houston, pour guider et encadrer les jeunes diplômés nouvellement installés dans la ville.
Après avoir remercié les convives pour tout le soutien qu’ils apporteront à l’Université, le Recteur a déclaré que ce 1er dîne de gala à Houston marquera à jamais la communauté universitaire, étudiants et Alumni. Et d’ajouter, « l’USJ restera debout, prête à s’acquitter de sa mission éducative et citoyenne à servir le Liban, malgré les énormes difficultés et les nombreux défis auxquels elle fait face ».
La soirée a célébré le parcours exceptionnel du Dr Raymond Sawaya : la médaille de mérite de l’Université lui a été remise des mains du Recteur et un trophée lui a été présentée au nom du Chapitre . Dr Sawaya est Alumnus de la Faculté de médecine de l’USJ de la promotion 1974 ; il a été nommé en 2021 vice-président aux affaires médicales et doyen « Raja N. Kuri » de la Faculté de médecine de l’American University of Beirut – AUB. Dr Sawaya a prononcé un discours émouvant dans lequel il s’est rappelé son parcours qui a commencé à l’USJ et qui l’a amené à Houston, au Centre médical MD Anderson, insistant sur la place particulière de l’USJ dans la vie des Alumni et sur l’importance du réseau Alumni.
Le Recteur a de même offert la médaille de l’USJ, en signe de reconnaissance de leurs efforts pour rassembler les Alumni de l’USJ à Houston, au Dr Pierre Khoury (FM, 1991), à M. Pierre Moubarak (ESIB, 1988) ainsi qu’à Mme Randa Hakim, directrice du Northamerica office de l’USJ.
En marge du dîner, un encan silencieux a permis aux convives de miser sur des lots des plus intéressants.
Dans une étape qui a précédé le dîner de gala, la délégation a été accueillie la veille à la résidence de M. Joseph Hakim et son épouse Randa autour d’un dîner offert en l’honneur du Recteur et en présence de plusieurs personnalités de Houston.

1st Gala Dinner in Houston!
The Houston Chapter of the USJ Alumni Association held its first gala dinner on Saturday, November 19, 2022. Nearly 300 alumni and friends of Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ) gathered around the Rector of USJ, Professor Salim Daccache s. j. and his delegation including the President of the Federation of USJ Alumni Associations, Prof. Christian Makary, and the Director of the Fondation USJ, Mrs. Cynthia Ghobril Andrea. The event highlighted the importance of the USJ Alumni community in remaining true to the values of their Alma mater and in showing solidarity with it.
Father Edward Hanna, the pastor of Our Lady of the Cedars parish, led off the evening with a prayer. Afterwards, Dr. Pierre Khoury, President of the Houston Chapter, welcomed the guests and gave an overview of the Lebanese community in Houston.
Mrs. Cynthia Ghobril gave an update on the initiatives undertaken by the Fondation USJ in the context of increasingly difficult economic and social crises. According to her, providing financial aid to needy students is tantamount to giving the next generation of USJ graduates a chance to excel and succeed.
Prof. Christian Makary emphasized the efforts made in recent years to revitalize the links between the University and its Alumni but also between the Alumni themselves. He highlighted the synergy and the vital role of internationally based Alumni, in this instance in Houston, in guiding and mentoring young graduates newly settled in the city.
After thanking the guests for all the future support to the University, the Rector declared that this 1st Gala Dinner in Houston will forever be remembered by the University community, students, and Alumni. He added, “USJ will keep pushing forward, ready to fulfill its educational and civic mission to serve Lebanon, despite the enormous difficulties and the many challenges it faces.”
The evening also honored Dr. Raymond Sawaya, who was presented with the University's Medal of Merit by the Rector and a trophy presented to him on behalf of the Chapter. Dr. Sawaya is an alumnus of the USJ Faculty of Medicine, class of 1974; he was appointed in 2021 as Raja N. Khuri Dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Vice President for Medical Affairs at the American University of Beirut (AUB). Dr. Sawaya delivered a moving speech in which he recalled his journey that started at USJ and brought him to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, underlining the special significance of USJ in the lives of Alumni and the importance of the Alumni network.
The Rector also presented the USJ medal to Dr. Pierre Khoury (FM, 1991), Mr. Pierre Moubarak (ESIB, 1988). and Ms. Randa Hakim, Director of the USJ North America Office, in recognition of their efforts to bring together USJ Alumni in Houston.
During the dinner, a silent auction was held where guests were able to contribute to USJ.
A day before the gala dinner, the delegation was welcomed at the residence of Mr. Joseph Hakim and his spouse Randa for a dinner in honor of the Rector and the attendance of several Houston dignitaries.
